The Wire, Baltimore, Maryland’de geçen bir drama dizisidir. ABD’de HBO’da yayınlanan dizinin yapımcısı ve yazarı, eski polis muhabiri David Simon’dır. Yayınına 2 Haziran 2002’de başlanan dizi beş sezonun ardından, 9 Mart 2008’de sona erdi. Dizinin her bir sezonu Baltimore şehrinin ayrı bir yüzüne odaklanmıştır. Bunlar sırasıyla, uyuşturucu trafiği, liman, şehir yönetimi ve bürokrasi, eğitim sistemi ve yazılı basındır. Geniş oyuncu kadrosu, genelikle başka rolleriyle çok ünlü olmamış kişilerden oluşur. Simon dizinin bir suç draması şeklinde sunulmasına karşın “gerçekten Amerikan şehriyle, bir arada nasıl yaşadığımızla ilgili. Kurumların bizi bağımsız bireyler olarak nasıl etkilediğiyle ilgili ve ister polis, ister yükleme işçisi, ister uyuşturucu satıcısı, ister politikacı, yargıç ya da avukat, en sonunda riske girerek bağlı olduğunuz kurumla mücadele etmeniz gerektiğine ilişkin” yorumunu yapmıştır. Büyük bir ticari başarı yada ciddi bir televizyon ödülü kazanamamış olsa da, The Wire genel olarak eleştirmenler tarafından gelmiş geçmiş en büyük televizyon dizilerinden biri şeklinde tanımlanmaktadır. Dizi, şehir hayatını, sanatsal hırsları gerçekçi yansıtması ve sosyopolitik temaları alışılagelmişin aksine derinlemesine incelemesiyle dikkat çekmektedir.
